Schools closed Monday for Martin Luther King day

Racine Unified schools will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Classes will not be in session so students and staff can celebrate the legacy of Dr. King. The district is joining other organizations in a Racine celebration in which high school students will meet at 8 a.m. at Memorial Hall downtown and be bused to community service projects throughout the city.

Racine's MLK Day celebration also includes a Peace March at Monument Square at 11:30 a.m. followed by a series of social justice workshops at Memorial Hall. The celebration concludes at 6 p.m. with a community-wide dinner and program.

I'll be working on that day so I can pay my taxes.

It would be interesting to ask a random sample of K though 8th graders and ask the question - who is Martin King and what did he stand for?

I can guess the response!

Dr. King was a great American who gave his life in a great cause. It is appropriate to remember him in this way.
