Arc holds program on special education and IEP's

The Arc of Racine will sponsor a training program for parents and guardians of children who receive special education services, on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Mount Pleasant Lutheran Church, 1700 South Green Bay Road. Teachers, advocates, attorneys and others who are interested are welcome to attend as space permits.

The program will include the basics of what parents need to know about the special education law known as IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) and writing the IEP (Individualized Education Program). The IEP is a required document for students receiving special education and spells out what the school will provide for the child.

The program presenter is Sue Endress from Disability Rights Wisconsin (formerly Wisconsin Coalition for Advocacy) Milwaukee Office. Disability Rights is the protection and advocacy organization for the State of Wisconsin.

There is no cost to attend but registration is required. For more information or to register by phone, call The Arc at (262) 634-6303. This training is being provided through a grant from the Lighted Schoolhouse Program at Racine Unified School District. Three more programs intended to empower parents of children with disabilities will be featured during the school year, on behavior, conflict resolution and inclusion; however, the dates have not yet been set.

The Arc of Racine is a membership organization that advocates for children and adults with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.
