Raiders take on Wolfpack and literacy;
Bring a book to donate at Saturday's game!

The Racine Raiders continue their 56-year mission of supporting the Racine community Saturday, Aug.2, by hosting "Literacy Night" at Historic Horlick Field. The team has several promotions planned to support this special evening.

The first promotion takes place at the gate where fans who bring a new or gently used children's book to donate will receive a voucher good for $1 off a ticket to any future home game at Historic Horlick Field during the 2008 season.

The books are being collected for the Cops 'n Kids program. Cops 'n Kids was started by former police officer Julia Burney in 1997. Originally, police handed out books from the trunk of squad cars. Now, Cops 'n Kids has a reading center in Racine that services upwards of 100 kids in an after-school program, 90% of whom come from low-income families. For more information on Cops 'n Kids, please visit their website.

The Racine Public Library has also teamed up with the Raiders for the night and will have their Racine Public Mobile Library (aka, Bookmobile) onsite from the time the gates open at 5:30 p.m. until the game is over.

Fans will be able to obtain a library card at Historic Horlick Field by filling out an application. Fans will also need a driver's license or State of Wisconsin identification card with their current address and one of the following for proof of residency: checkbook, utility bill, rent receipt, or postmarked mail.

Children under 16 need a parent or guardian to complete the application and provide identification and address verification.

Anyone who lives in Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Dodge, Jefferson, and Washington counties is eligible to receive a free library card. For more information on the Racine Public Library, please visit their website.

At halftime, the Racine Raiders will present the three, $500 scholarships the team awards annually to graduating seniors attending Racine County high schools. The winners of the scholarships are Matthew (Matt) Patzke from Lutheran High School, Melissa Goetz of Horlick High School, and Karly Shuerman from Burlington High School. Patzke will attend Carthage College; Goetz, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside; and Shuerman is going to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

The Raiders play Dells Division rivals, the Wisconsin Wolfpack on Saturday at 7 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. The Wolfpack are coached by former Racine Raiders head coach Jordan Kopac.
