The MITs (Musicians in Training) will perform at Music on the Monument on Friday, Aug. 8. The free concert will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Monument Square.
The MITs are a group of 14- and 15-year-old boys and girls who have been performing together for three years. They began as a garage/basement band in sixth grade and have matured musically to perform jazz, rock, pop, blues, Disney tunes, polkas, and solo classical music. All of the band members are honor roll students who play multiple instruments.
They have performed locally at many venues including Party on the Pavement, Festival of Trees, and Monument Square Art Fair as well as private parties, store openings and other community events. Their most recent musical achievement was to audition and be selected for the Milwaukee Area Regional Competition of the Wisconsin School Music Association’s Launchpad competition (which was spotlighting up and coming young musical talent in a battle of the bands).
Band members include: Maggie Jones (flute, piccolo and tenor sax); Willy Mueller (keyboard); Nolan Thomas (alto sax and piano); Katie Wright (bass guitar and clarinet) and Steven Wright (drums and guitar).
Music at the Monument is celebrating its sixth anniversary of providing free summer concerts at Monument Square every Friday from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. through August. Chairs and umbrellas are provided. In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be moved indoors to the Red Onion Cafe located at 555 Main Street (inside The Johnson Building).
Music on the Monument is presented by the Downtown Racine Corporation, and is funded in part by a grant from the Racine Arts Council, Racine United Arts Fund and the Wisconsin Arts Board.

I'm one of Nolan's teachers and I know how much he enjoys his music - I hope Racine keeps encouraging students like these, because these kids are trying to do something incredibly positive and they are shining examples of what Racine and RUSD have to offer!
